Are You Listening To Me? (Part 2)
Okay, so what do you want to know about your customers? Let’s keep it specific but fairly simple to start with and then you can build on it from there as you see fit. Always keep the questions positive such as what do they like instead of what they don’t like. These half-dozen basic sample questions tell you exactly what you need to know about how, when and where to successfully market to get the customers that you want.![]()
1 - What does my product or service do for you?
2 - If you were looking for my product or service, where would you typically look?
3 - What words would you use to describe my product or service?
4 - What words or phrases would you type into a search engine to find my product or service?
5 - On which websites or directories do you typically look for a product or service like mine?
6 - What is most important to you when selecting a product or service like mine?
Now, who do you want to know this from? That’s pretty easy but not always obvious. Start with your best repeat customers who continue to come back and who seem to focus more on the value they are getting rather than on cost. Those are the customers that you really want more of.
Finally, how do you ask them? Casual indirect conversation is the best way to get the most honest answers. If your customers are happy with your product or service they will be thrilled with the fact that you’re interested in what they have to say. But, while this method may be the best, it’s not always most practical as it is limited to customers that you can personally meet with face to face.
The telephone is another great way to be able to reach more people while still keeping that personal one-on-one touch. A third method that lets you reach many people but with little to no personal contact is the survey. Surveys can be verbal, written or in email or online form but they should all be short with just a handful of very specific and simple questions that are targeted to customers that you want to know more about.
It just so happens that our Constant Contact email marketing solution also offers a very simple to use, yet powerful, email survey solution that you can use to quickly and easily send surveys to your customers and compile the responses into easy to understand reports. Just go to Constant Contact right now to try it FREE for 60-days with no obligation and no credit card required.
Above all, the most important thing to remember is to NEVER just assume that since you’re the business owner that you must know what your customers want and need. You’ll soon find that your customers will let you know that you really don’t have a clue what they want and the consequences will be devastating to your business.
